NRE Convergence Project Subsidy

Purpose

This program supports projects supplying energy by using combined sources or new and renewable energy. The support is given to projects that install new and renewable energy facilities of compatible energy sources such as solar PV and wind energy on residential, public and commercial buildings in a certain area to supply electricity and heat.

Legal basis
  • The article 27 of the Act on the Promotion of the Deployment, Use and Diffusion of New and Renewable Energy
  • The article 35 of the Regulation on the Support for New and Renewable Energy Facilities (MOITE Notification No. 2014-56)
Eligibility
  • Consortium of local government/public institutes, new and renewable energy facility manufacturers, installing companies and other private entities. The lead-entity of the consortium must be local government or public institute.
Public institutes are those that are prescribed in the article 4 of the Act on the Management of Public Institutions
Size of the subsidy

Total 10 billion won in 2014 (designated consortiums match over 50% of the total cost of the project)

  • Total cost: Installation cost of the new and renewable facilities and system designing cost
  • Scope of the subsidy: Maximum 50% of the total cost. Maximum 70% of the total cost in case of fuel cell projects
Targets of the subsidy
  • Energy source convergence project where more than two kinds of new and renewable energy sources (solar PV, wind and solar thermal etc.) are used
  • Projects to supply energy to an area where different types of buildings all eligible for subsidies (residential, public and commercial) are located
only new and renewable facilities for self-consumption are eligible
fuel cell for transportation, electronic vehicles and recharge stations are not eligible
Convergence project models eligible for the subsidy
Convergence project models eligible for the subsidy
Convergence of energy sources in an area where grid-interconnection is not available
  • Install solar PV and wind energy facilities in areas where power generation cost is high (islands, remote areas) to replace existing power generation facilities such as diesel generators
  • Track record for developing independent small grid facilities for export can be built and operation cost can be reduced by using alternative energy sources. (Capacity of energy storage facility increases and there are limitations in conducting follow-up measures such as facility maintenance.)
Convergence of energy sources in an area where grid-interconnection is available
  • Install electricity facilities for solar PV, small wind power or fuel cell energy and thermal facilities for solar thermal and geothermal in residential complex etc.
  • Self-sufficiency of energy can be attained but designing optimal combination of energy sources is difficult
Combination of different types of buildings in a certain area
  • Install facilities for solar PV, wind or fuel cell energy in areas where different types of buildings that are all eligible for subsidies (residential, public and commercial) are located.
  • Supply of optimal portfolio of new and renewable energy sources that is tailored to the region
